A Conversation with John Fischer, Co-Founder of Axcelus Financial

Home / Q&A / A Conversation with John Fischer, Co-Founder of Axcelus Financial

John Fischer is the Co-Founder of Axcelus Financial, responsible for International business development. Here we sit down with John to pick his brain on how his original vision for Axcelus Financial is coming to life today and lessons from his 30+ years experience of developing strategic insurance solutions.

Q: How has the company’s vision evolved from its founding, and what were the key drivers behind those changes?

A: Our initial thought was to be an institutional product provider, but circumstances dictated that we focus on the high-net-worth individual market, where we developed a reputation for creating innovative insurance solutions.ย  After establishing a strong presence in that space, we returned to institutional markets and expanded globally, notably through the formation of our Bermuda-based insurance companies.

Q: What have been the most significant milestones or turning points in the company’s history that have shaped its current approach to the private placement insurance market?

A: Rather than a single turning point, itโ€™s been more about cultivating a mindset, one that embraces identifying hidden opportunities and responding with creative and at times unconventional solutions. This approach has consistently resonated with our partners and their clients. The real shift came as the market began to recognize the company for its problem-solving capabilities and collaborative approach.

Q: How does the company’s history of adaptation and transformation provide it with a unique advantage in a competitive and changing market?

A: While adaptability has been key, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to the private placement insurance spaceโ€”across individual, institutional, and global markets. We have never strayed from our original vision,ย and have continuously adapted, allowing us to seek areas of constant improvement while continuing to innovate while moving forward.

Q: In your experience, what are the most crucial factors for achieving long-term success and sustainability in the private placement insurance industry?

A: ย I wouldnโ€™t limit this to private placement insurance alone. Long-term success in any business requires adaptability, an eye for emerging trends, and surrounding yourself with driven, like-minded individuals who are passionate about their work and energized by what they do.

Q: With over 30 years in the industry, what are the most significant changes you’ve observed in the private placement landscape, and how has the company adapted to those shifts?

A: ย One of the most notable shifts has been the broader acceptance of separately managed accounts (SMAs). Itโ€™s amusing to see some of the same people who once opposed SMAs now actively promoting them. From our earliest days, we recognized the potential of the SMA structure โ€” though Iโ€™ll resist the urge to say, โ€œI told you so!โ€

Q: What specific trends have you observed that have most influenced the longevity and stability of private placement insurance solutions for clients?

A: In short, the solution has gone mainstream. While 30 years is hardly an overnight success, we are seeing increased familiarity and engagement from prospective clients, investment managers and global distributors, many of whom now view private placement structures as an established component of the insurance landscape.

Q: What’s been one of the most significant lessons you’ve learned in your career that you believe is applicable to the company’s future success?

A: Over the long haul, having a strong sense of conviction and a well-thought-out plan will ultimately prevailโ€”even if it doesnโ€™t seem obvious at the beginning.

Q: As we look to the future, what are the key lessons from the company’s past that will guide its continued growth and success?
A:ย Staying true to our principles, remaining focused on our core markets, and continuously adapting without losing sight of our original vision will continue to guide us forward.

Q: We have to ask a fun one: What’s your favorite football team, the Falcons or the Eagles?

A: The Eagles and anyone playing the Dallas Cowboys!
